Why Should You Feed Fruits To Your Weimaraner?

Dogs are carnivores and don’t really need fruits on vegetables in their diet. You can use fruit as an ocassional and fun treat for your pup.

Fruits are great for dogs just like they’re good for us. They are packed with loads of essential nutrients including vitamins, antioxidants, minerals and other trace elements. In fact, some fruits are considered as superfoods, they can give a tough fight to several deadly diseases like cancer.

However, the thing to note is that not all fruits are safe for Weimaraners or dogs in general. While some fruits are extremely healthy for them, some others come with many unwanted risks.

The right fruits will help your Weimaraner to strengthen their bones, enhance immunity, improve their skin, enhance digestion and more.

Safe Fruit For Weimaraners

Apples & Pears

The fresh, juicy and crunchy apples are loved by these pets. They are loaded with essential nutrients such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, digestive fibres and other trace elements.

However, be aware of the apple seeds (as well as pear seeds), they contain a toxic compound named cyanide which is harmful for animals. Remove the core and all the seeds before giving an apple to your dog. You can even freeze it to make a refreshing treat in hot summer months.

Bananas

These sweet, mushy fruits make one of the most favorite treats of Weimaraners. They can be an excellent snack on the go. Bananas are rich in potassium which is essential to keep the dog’s heart strong and kidneys efficient.

However, bananas are high in sugar. So, give them to your dog sparingly otherwise he’ll put on weight. Banana and peanut butter are a popular choice for Kong filler!

Blackberries

Blackberries are completely safe for dogs. They are amazing treats and loved by animals as well. These juicy, soft fruits are loaded with antioxidants and are also rich in vitamin A and vitamin C. These are great for immunity and makes their hair shiny.

Again, don’t let your dogs eat blackberries in excess otherwise it will result in diarrhea.

Other berries

Berries are naturally high in fiber and rich in vitamins and antioxidants. You can treat your dog to these berries:

  • raspberries
  • blueberries
  • strawberries
  • cranberries

Other Exotic Fruits

The exotic fruits listed below are also great for your Weim! They are packed full of vitamins like A, C, E and K. Make sure to give them to your dog in moderation as they’re fairly sweet.

  • Kiwi – Make sure to remove the skin and the seeds.
  • Mango – Peel the skin and remove the pit.
  • Papaya – Papaya is also safe for Weims, just remove the seeds.
  • Canteloupe – Cantaloupe is pretty high in sugars, so make sure to feed it in moderation.
  • Pineapple – Pineapples contain bromelain which helps with the absorption of proteins. In small amounts pineapple is a great treat, just steer clear of the canned variety. Remove the pit and the skin before giving it to your pup.

Watermelon

I don’t know about your dog but Nelly absolutely loves watermelon. It is safe to eat for Weimaraners, just make sure to remove the rind and the seeds. It’s a great treat for hot summer days for both human and the dog as it’s very hydrating due to its 92% water content.

Oranges

Some dogs don’t like the quite strong odor of citrus fruits but you can try with your Weim. Dogs can eat oranges, just make sure to peel them first and remove any seeds. If you’re treating your dog to an orange, make sure to only give small pieces, otherwise your pup might get an upset stomach.

Dogs can also eat nectarines and tangerines, just make sure to remove the skin and any seeds.

Other citrus fruit can be quite acidic and cause gastrointestinal upset in your Weim. Always in moderation!

Peaches

Peaches are safe for pups, just make sure to cut around the pit and completely remove it. Much like other stone fruits, the pit contains cyanide. Peaches are a great source of fibre for good digestion.

Pumpkin

I always thought pumpkin was a fall vegetable but I have been proven wrong, by definition it’s a fruit! (source) Pumpkin is rich in potassium, fibre, magnesium and iron. You can use pure (no sugar, spice or salt) canned pumpkin if your dog has some tummy troubles or if you’re switching diets, it can help with both constipation and diarrhea.

Fruits That Are Not Safe For Weimaraners

Some fruits are great for humans but harmful for dogs. So, avoid giving your pooch the below-mentioned fruits :

Avocado

Avocado might be a superfood for humans but it’s not meant for our pups. It contains a compound called persin which is highly toxic for dogs. If your pet accidentally eats an avocado, take him to your vet. It may result in diarrhea and vomiting.

Cherries

Although the pulp of cherries is to die for, their pits are dangerous as they contain cyanide. There are chances of your dog gulping down the pit while enjoying the flesh of a cherry. So, to avoid any risk, it is better to avoid giving them cherries altogether.

Grapes

Grapes and raisins both are not meant for the dogs. They can cause kidney issues and can put them at risk. So, never feed grapes to your dogs.

There are other fruits such as peaches, plums, melons that you should avoid feeding your beloved Weimaraner.

Tomatoes

While ripe tomatoes are generally safe for dogs, unripe tomatoes contain toxic compound named solanine. This compound also appears in the green parts of the tomato plant like the stems and leaves. So if you are growing tomatoes in your garden, make sure your pup doesn’t have access to them. Solanine can cause tomatine poisoning.

Kumquats

The skin of kumquats can be irritating to dog’s mouth and stomach, so it’s best to avoid them altogether.

Acai Berries

While there have been no cases of dogs poisoned by acai berries, keep in mind that they contain theobromine. This compound is also present in chocolate and we know that chocolate is toxic to dogs. I would avoid them.

Can Weimaraners Eat Coconut?

Coconut meat is great for dog’s hair and their overall health. These are an excellent source of anti-inflammatories compounds that help in treating issues such as skin allergies, arthritis, digestion etc.

You can safely add some coconut meat to your pup and see if they like it. You can also try adding a spoonful of coconut oil to their meals.

However coconuts are high in fat and could cause upset stomach or bloat. Always check with your vet if your dog is prone to pancreatitis.

Conclusion

Fruits safe for dogs are excellent treat for Weimaraners but make sure to feed them in moderation.

If your dog eats a fruit that’s bad for them, contact your vet. Usually they will advise you to keep an eye on any symptoms and will suggest a vet visit if they get worse.
