Weimaraner Rescues in Colorado

Colorado Weimaraner Rescues

There are currently two Weimaraner rescues serving the state of Colorado.

Mile High Weimaraner Rescue

Mile High Weimaraner Rescue (MHWR) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Denver. The rescue is foster based, which means Weims available for adoption are placed with foster families. In some cases the dogs may be housed in partnered boarding facilities.

MHWR rescues about 150 Weimaraners per year on average. MHWR serves the state of Colorado but they are willing to adopt out to neighboring states.

You can support MHWR by donating via Paypal (one time or recurring), you can also choose which cause to support – senior Weimaraners, special needs Weims, medical fund or general expense fund.

You can also support by volunteering – this can be anything from becoming a foster parent, to helping with applications, screening adopters, helping at events, picking and dropping off supplies or simply transporting the dogs.

The rescue also has an online shop where they offer Weimaraner calendar, rescue t-shirts, chocolate, wine and candles.

MHWR also hosts events for people who are interested in the breed or adopting/fostering a dog, it’s a great way of meeting fostered dogs and socializing them. All proceeds from these events go to MHWR

If you find yourself in a difficult life situation and you need to surrender your Weim, Mile High Weimaraner Rescue accepts surrendered Weimaraners. Generally the surrender fee is $25, if you’re in a financial difficulty, this fee can be waived.

Adoption Application Process

The adoption application process is fairly simple – fill out the adoption application form. You will need to fill out details about yourself, your spouse and other household members including pets, details about your home and yard and your previous and current pet experience with Weims or other breeds.

You will need to state what kind of Weim you’d like – male/female, preffered age, how severe issues you can handle. You will need to mention what life with your new Weim is going to be like – how long they’re going to be alone at home, what they are going to eat, how much exercise and type they will get.

You will also need to include vet reference and two other references which are not family.

Adoption Requirements

There are some requirements that you need to follow in order for your application to be approved:

  • you need to be at least 21 years old
  • all dogs in your household must be spayed/neutered, be up to shots
  • if you live in an apartment, you need to have a permission from your landlord

If your application is approved, it will be kept on file for 9 months. If a suitable dog hasn’t been found for you in that timeframe, you will need to send a new application.

Adoption Costs

Weimaraner’s AgeAdoption Cost
8 weeks – 6 months$500
7 months – 6 years$350
7 years – 9 years$225
10+ years$125

As the Mile High Weimaraner Rescue is an all-volunteer organization, it can take a few weeks before your application is processed. The volunteers will check all your references and then schedule a call and a home visit (if possible).

Then you will schedule to meet the Weim at the foster family location. If all goes well, you will sign the adoption agreement and pay the adoption fee.

Weimaraners are not adopted out on a first-come first-served basis but the rescue makes sure that both the dog and the adoptive family are a suitable match. It can take anywhere from 2 to 4 months to find a suitable dog.

Grey Ghost Weimaraner Rescue

The Grey Ghost Weimaraner Rescue was established in November 2016 in Monument, Colorado. It’s a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, solely based on volunteers and foster care. Most Weims are placed in foster families, while others can be placed in partnered boarding facilities.

You can support the rescue by donating via Paypal (one time or recurring monthly donation) and much like Mile High Weimaraner Rescue above, you can choose which fund your donation will go towards to – senior WEimaraners, puppies, vets and traning, events, etc.

You can also support the rescue by shopping with Amazon Smile – Amazon will donate 0.5% of your purchase to the rescue. Grey Ghost Weimaraner rescue also has their own Amazon wishlist for essential items like collars, leashes, harnesses, food supplements, toys, snacks, etc.

You can also buy the rescue T-shirts to support them.

Of course you can help out by volunteering at the rescue. Volunteering can include fostering, but also generally helping out with the running of the rescue such as home visits, transportation, help at events and more.

The rescue also hosts regular events where you can come meet fostered Weims, learn more about the breed and socialize with other Weimaraner lovers.

Grey Ghost Weimaraner Rescue accepts surrenders, so if you find yourself in a difficult situation, first contact the rescue via email and they will discuss your options with you.

Adoption Application Process

As is standard, you will need to fill out the adoption application form with information about yourself, other household members including pets. If you’ve had a Weim before, you can fill out your experience with them, including any bite history and general medical history.

As there are some special needs Weims at Grey Ghost Weimaraner Rescue, you can describe what type of issues you’d be comfortable handling. You will need to provide personal (not family) and vet reference as well as landlord permission if you are renting your place.

As the rescue is ran by volunteers, please allow ample time for your application to be processed. You will be contacted for a phone interview and then a home visit will be set up.

Adoption Costs

Weimaraner’s AgeAdoption Cost
0 – 3 years$300

I’ve always loved dogs, ever since I was a child. Unfortunately, I wasn’t allowed to have one. My sister got a Weimaraner girl, Nelly, and I puppy-sit her often. That’s why I decided to start this blog and share what I’ve learned, about Nelly and the Weimaraner breed in general. Learn more about Dana.
